9/13 - Daniel 9
Daniel 9 begins with Daniel reading God's Word and realizing that Israel's promised seventy years of exile were coming to an end. Rather than simply celebrating the possibility of restoration, Daniel responds to Scripture with prayer, fasting, confession, and repentance. He identifies Israel's sin honestly, refusing to minimize or rename it, while recognizing that God has been righteous and faithful even in His discipline.
Daniel's prayer ultimately moves from confession to an appeal for God's mercy and character. God responds by showing Daniel that His plan is bigger than simply returning Israel to Jerusalem: He is dealing with sin, bringing righteousness, fulfilling His promises, and establishing His kingdom, with the Messiah at the center. The application is straightforward: when God's Word exposes something in us, we should see it, name it, turn from it, and turn to Him. Conviction is not God pushing us away in shame; it is evidence of His grace calling us home.
Big Idea: When God's Word exposes something in us, His conviction is an invitation to see our sin honestly, turn from it, and turn toward Him in repentance and obedience.

Daniel had been faithful to God for decades, yet he was still willing to let God’s Word expose areas that needed attention. What does that teach us about spiritual maturity?

Daniel didn’t compare Israel’s sin to someone else’s righteousness—he looked at God’s righteousness. Where are you tempted to make yourself feel better by comparing your life to someone else’s?
